Corydon Fuller papers, 1851-1887.

This collection consists of a scrapbook; various diplomas and commissions; speeches and writings; letters of condolence and memorials written to Mary Fuller on the occasion of the death of her husband; and miscellaneous business correspondence. The scrapbook includes 51 holograh letters written to Fuller from Garfield (Dec. 5, 1851-May 29, 1880); newspaper clippings of Fullers published writings and speeches; a biographical article about his brother, William D. Fuller; a certificate recognizing Fuller's membership in the Indiana Soldiers' and Seamen's Home Association; a program for a Garfield memorial services (1881); and an announcement of the publication of the Garfield biography (1887). Accompanying the scrapbook are two copies of transcriptions of Garfield's letters which were written between Dec. 5, 1851 and Nov. 17, 1853.

Fuller befriended James Garfield while attending the Hiram Eclectic Institute (Hiram, Ohio). After leaving the college Fuller and Garfield carried on an extensive correspondence until Garfield's death in 1881. At the time of Fuller's death in 1886 he was residing in Des Moines and was preparing a biography of Garfield which was published with the title Reminiscences of Garfield. James Garfield, twentieth President of the United States, was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, in 1831. After embarking on an academic career, he joined the Ohio volunteer infantry regiment, and in 1863 was appointed Major General in the same regiment. He served as a member of the U. S. House of Representatives from 1863 to 1880, when he was elected President.
